Per wikipedia.com, Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of the internal organs. The most common area affected is the lining of the lungs and chest wall. Less commonly the lining of the abdomen and rarely the sac surrounding the heart, or the sac surrounding the testis may be affected.


Cancer is a dreaded health condition, in which ever form it may manifest. People fear cancerous illnesses, yet few take an interest in understanding some of the fundamental facts of cancer. In most cases, they start digging for cancer facts once they are diagnosed with a cancerous disease. This is a global health problem, a medical issue that people should become more conversant with since cancer cases have increased significantly over the last decade. In light to this, below are some cancer facts that everyone should know.


1. Cancer is not an actual disease as often assumed; rather, it is a set of various diseases which are often cells with an abnormal or uncontrollable growth that rapidly spread to on bodies tissues and to other organs. Cancer and manifest in any part of the body.


2. One in every eight deaths is due to cancer. In fact, research shows that cancer has a mortality rate that is higher than that of malaria, AIDs and TB combined. While it is a dreaded health condition, researchers across the world agree that most of the cancer-related deaths (at least half) are preventable. If the cancer is detected early and with proper medical care, it is possible to survive the disease.


3. People often think of cancer as a genetic condition, but research shows that less than 5% of cancer cases have a genetic link. Most of the cancers are due to poor life choices, lack of information, and poor diets, unhealthy habits such as smoking and alcoholism, and pollution.


4. Adults are more likely to develop cancer than children. However, it is estimated that more than 40 children in America are diagnosed with cancer, and this has made the disease the #1 child killer in today’s society.


5. Though cancer can happen at any age, in adults, men are more susceptible to developing cancer than women with most cases being diagnosed in patients above the age of 55. Both men and women are susceptible to colon and lung cancer; however, males are vulnerable to rectum and prostate cancers while females will contract breast, stomach and cervical cancers.


6. Poor diet is a huge concern, next to pollution. However, the modern society is full of food products that pollute and weaken the body’s immune system. Processed foods such as sodas, hydrogenated oils, refined/artificial sugars, canned food products that contain BPA, and processed meats as among the top food products associated with the development of cancer in both adults and children.


7. Lack of exercising and obesity have been found to increase the risk of cancer along with other major medical health problems. Obesity has also been found to lower the chances of surviving the disease once diagnosed, and the situation is worse for obese individuals who are also dealing with diabetes.


8. Most cancer cases are often discovered in their late stages, though some are diagnosed early, and these are often treatable. Those found in their late stage of development tend to be harder to treat because they may have spread to other parts, but the chances getting cured cannot be downplayed. Early detection or diagnosis is a crucial factor in the success of cancer treatment.
